Lawrence Berkeley Lab hires sustainability chief
John Elliott is the first sustainability officer to be hired at a national Department of Energy lab.
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory hired John Elliott who's worked five years at the University of California, Merced, as its first chief sustainability officer.
His job will be to oversee energy efficiency and "sustainable practices" at the Department of Energy laboratory, which is managed by the University of California. LBL's deputy director, Horst Simon, will be Elliott's boss.
Lab boss Paul Alivisatos said, "To walk the talk we must use our own facilities to show the world what can be achieved."
The lab is planning a second campus at the Richmond Field Station between I-580 and San Francisco Bay. That 152 acre campus is supposed to open in 2016.
Elliott is the first chief sustainability officer at any of the 17 national Department of Energy labs.
