California-based Solar Power lands 68 Hawaii projects

Solar Power Inc. will become the largest utility-scale developer in Hawaii. 

Photovoltaic systems developer Solar Power Inc. has picked up the rights to develop 68 projects in Hawaii.

The projects, spread across three islands, will be ground mount solar energy facilities with some rooftop and shade structures, according to the company. The power produced – about 29 megawatts – will go directly to the state’s power grid.

Roseville, Calif.-based SPI Solar (OTCBB: SOPW) also will have the option to go after another 10 megawatts of projects, according to the company.

Hawaii is requiring 40 percent of its energy to come from renewable sources by 2030, a goal higher than California’s 33 percent by 2020.

Construction will begin within the next quarter.
