USDA's Vilsack talks 'green' jet fuel

Tom Vilsack is in Ohio this week talking up sustainable aviation fuel development.
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack visited GE Aviation's headquarters in Evandale, Ohio Wednesday to highlight the U.S. Department of Agriculture's collaboration with GE and the aviation industry on a regional venture to produce renewable jet fuel.
GE wants to procure a minimum of 5 million gallons of renewable jet fuel by 2015 for its jet engine testing operations in Evendale and at its Peebles test ground east of Cincinnati.
Vilsack will discuss how this effort will help grow jobs across Ohio by bringing together agricultural producers, processing and transportation entities, refiners and finishers, academics and researchers, and analysts and financial entities, according to a USDA press release.
USDA recently awarded a grant to the Ohio Soybean Council for a pilot project through Ohio State University's Bioproducts Innovation Center to refine biofuel from soybean oil produced by farmers at a cooperative in Western Ohio.
The Northwest has its own push for sustainable aviation fuels.
