MotoCzysz takes home trophy in Isle of Man race

MotoCzysz took home the TT Zero trophy Wednesday — and shattered the 100 mph barrier for electric motorcycle racing.

MotoCzysz made it official Wednesday, winning the prestigious TT Zero electric motorcycle race with the winning rider coming in with an average of 104 mph for the 37 mile course.

After a promising showing in the practice run, Portland-based MotoCzysz won the race, which is held each June on the Isle of Man, and a cash prize for breaking the 100 mph barrier, roughly $15,000 (10,000 British pounds). A MotoCzysz rider also took home the third-place trophy.

But after a MotoCzysz rider narrowly missed the 100 mph goal in last year's race, the 2012 TT Zero featured all three finishers with better than 100 mph averages. MotoCzysz has won the TT Zero for the last three years.

Finishing the TT Zero in second place was the Team Mugen rider with an average of 102 miles per hour. Mugen, a freshman on the electric racing circuit, is widely seen as a proxy for Honda. As Gizmag's Mike Hanlon puts it: "Honda is clearly coming after the mantle of the world's fastest EV producer."
