Nike is inviting the geeks of Portland to a one-day "hackathon" to play with โ and generate ideas for improving โ its Nike Materials Sustainability Index.
"We hope that releasing this framework and data will jumpstart a rich conversation within the footwear and apparel industry," Nike officials say in the calendar listing for the event.
As reported by Silicon Florist, Nike is hosting the hackathon at the Pearl District startup hive PIE all day on May 18.
"As with any hackathon, whatever you come up with is yours. Nike is just hoping the data inspires you to do something interesting," writes Silicon Florist's Rick Turoczy.
He adds: "Besides. When was the last time you had a massive global corporation offering to let you hack on their data?"
Nike, which announced earlier this month its new effort to develop a sustainable factory index, first released its materials index in 2010.
